Search · Answer engines explained

What is answer engine optimisation, and how is it different from SEO?

When the answer arrives before the click

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of shaping your content so search engines and AI assistants can lift it as a direct answer, in featured snippets, Google AI Overviews, voice assistants and chat tools. SEO aims to rank a page and earn the click; AEO aims to be the quoted answer itself. For Danish businesses the two share most foundations but measure success differently.

What answer engine optimisation means

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with an answer rather than a list of links. Google has been one for years in a small way: featured snippets, the “People also ask” boxes and knowledge panels all answer directly on the results page. Voice assistants such as Siri and Google Assistant read out a single answer. More recently, Google’s AI Overviews and chat tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity write a summary and cite a handful of sources.

Answer engine optimisation is the work of making your content the source those systems choose. It is not a separate discipline invented from nothing. It grew out of the techniques people used to win featured snippets, and it has become more important as more searches end with an answer on the screen and no click at all.

You will also see the term GEO, generative engine optimisation. People use the two terms in overlapping ways. On our site, AEO covers being the direct answer to specific questions, while GEO covers how AI models understand and recommend your business more broadly.

How AEO differs from SEO

Traditional SEO and AEO share a lot, but they aim at different moments and reward slightly different writing.

The biggest practical difference is the unit. SEO thinks about pages; AEO thinks about passages. A page can rank well and still never be quoted, because the answer is buried in the fourth paragraph after a long introduction. Equally, a single clear paragraph on a modest page can be lifted into an AI Overview.

The SEO foundations AEO depends on

It is tempting to treat AEO as a shortcut, but answer engines mostly draw on the same index and the same quality signals as search. Before anything else, a site needs:

  • Pages that can be crawled and indexed, with no accidental blocks in robots.txt or noindex tags.
  • Fast, mobile-friendly pages; Google uses mobile-first indexing.
  • A clear site structure, so each topic has one obvious page.
  • Signs of trust: who wrote the content, who the business is, how to contact it, and links or mentions from other credible sites.
  • Accurate, up-to-date information, especially prices, opening hours and service areas.

Google has said that pages appearing in AI Overviews must be indexed and eligible to show in normal search, and that the usual SEO best practices apply. If those basics are weak, start with SEO, because AEO work will not hold on a shaky site.

Writing content that answer engines can lift

Once the foundations are sound, the writing itself makes the difference. A few habits help a great deal:

  1. Use the question as the heading. Phrase headings the way people actually ask, in their own words, including Danish phrasing where you write in Danish.
  2. Answer in the first sentence. Give the direct answer straight under the heading, in one or two sentences that make sense on their own, then explain.
  3. Keep answers self-contained. Avoid “as mentioned above”. A lifted passage has no “above”.
  4. Use lists and tables for steps and comparisons. They are easy for machines to parse and for people to scan.
  5. Be specific. Name places, numbers, time frames and conditions. Vague answers are rarely chosen when a specific one exists.
  6. State who you are. Name the business, the location and the author, so the source is clear when quoted.

Structured data in schema.org format, such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Article and FAQPage, helps machines understand what a page is about. Google limited FAQ rich results in 2023 to a narrow group of authoritative sites, so FAQ markup rarely produces the old expandable results now, but it still describes the content clearly. We build pages with this structure in our citation-ready pages work.

Finding the questions worth answering

AEO starts with the questions your customers actually ask. Good sources include:

  • The “People also ask” boxes and autocomplete suggestions in Google, searched in both Danish and English.
  • Search Console queries that are phrased as questions, filtered by words such as hvordan, hvad, hvor meget, how, what and cost.
  • Questions your sales team, receptionist or customer service hear every week.
  • Reviews, forums and community groups where people discuss your type of service.
  • Asking the AI assistants themselves what they would tell someone looking for your service, and noting which sources they cite.

Prioritise questions that sit close to a buying decision, such as cost, timing, comparison and suitability, over general trivia. Being the quoted answer to “what is a DJ” does little for a business; being quoted for “how far ahead should I book a wedding DJ in Denmark” can bring real enquiries.

How to measure AEO when clicks go missing

Measuring AEO is harder than measuring SEO, and it is worth being honest about that. When an answer engine quotes you and the user is satisfied, there may be no visit at all. Google Search Console includes AI Overview appearances within its normal web search data, without separating them out, so you cannot see AEO performance in a single report.

A workable approach combines several signals:

  • Regular manual checks of a fixed list of priority questions in Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, noting whether you appear and are cited.
  • Impressions in Search Console for question-style queries, even when clicks are low.
  • Referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sources in your analytics.
  • Growth in branded searches and direct enquiries that mention finding you through an AI assistant.

Expect gradual change. Answer engines refresh and re-rank sources continually, and results for the same question can differ from one day or user to the next.

Where a Danish business should start

For most small and medium businesses, a sensible first step is to pick the ten to twenty questions that matter most commercially, check whether you already answer each one clearly on a single page, and fix the gaps. Rewrite the opening of each relevant page so it answers directly, add an FAQ section with genuinely useful answers, and make sure your company details are consistent everywhere they appear online.

A short order of work that suits most sites:

  1. Fix technical blockers so every important page is indexed.
  2. Choose one page per question and remove or merge pages that compete for the same answer.
  3. Rewrite headings and opening sentences so the answer comes first.
  4. Add FAQ sections, tables and lists where they genuinely help the reader.
  5. Add or tidy structured data for your organisation, location and articles.
  6. Recheck your priority questions every month and adjust.

That work also strengthens your normal search rankings, so it is rarely wasted. Search and answer engines are converging, and a page written to answer a real question clearly tends to serve both.
